MY STORY
Growing up in the Brecon Beacons, I was raised in the Welsh language by parents who instilled a fierce love of our heritage. Wales is renowned as the land of poets, musicians and artists and goes to the heart of our culture.
From the age of 14 I was enamoured by Latin American culture and history which set the trajectory for my career in Law. After studying Spanish and Law at Swansea University and living in Colombia for a year it was on to Cardiff to pursue a career in human rights law. I forged a niche specialising in Latin American asylum claims, representing a range of clients from former DEA cartel informants to those fleeing the notorious gangs of El Salvador.
My early work was heavily influenced by the beautiful characters that I’ve come across on my travels and work. From the street art of Medellín, Colombia to the incredible faces of the locals in Old Havana, Cuba.
I began exhibiting my artwork twelve years ago across local art galleries and eventually found my feet in figurative oil painting. I implement techniques used by the Old Masters to depict contemporary characters. As an advocate of Welsh culture and craftsmanship, dedicating my first solo series to local traders felt instinctive. I continue to be influenced by different sub-cultures and the intricate stories and characters that exist within them. From these subjects I’ve derived the most pleasure in painting and hope that my work evokes a sense of ‘hiraeth’ for the onlooker.
